- On Issue 150 of LOADSTAR, there is
- a card program, STAR PINOCHLE, in
- which you are pitted against the
- computer, "Knees". Because recent
- issues of LOADSTAR have presented
- variations of the card game, Pinochle,
- I thought it would be timely to
- resurrect Bill's program.
-
- As an instructional tool (or for
- cheating), an author will often
- provide an option of seeing the
- opponent's cards. In the original
- version of STAR PINOCHLE, however,
- Knees' cards are displayed for such a
- short period of time that this option
- is not very useful.
-
- I have made a simple modifica-
- tion to the program that will allow
- enough time for you to copy Knees'
- cards of the various suits (Hearts,
- Spades, Diamonds and Clubs) on a
- piece of paper.
-
- All of the files (suitably
- modified) associated with the program
- are on this issue. The original
- text file written by Bill (with
- comments by Fender Tucker) includes
- a discussion of some of the aspects
- of Pinochle, such as "Meld",
- "Marriage", a "Run" and the special
- kind of deck used.
-
- Once the program is up and
- RUNning, a HELP file is accessible
- explaining in detail how the points of
- the Meld are computed. To determine
- the score for a hand, the points
- associated with the Meld, the actual
- play and a factor referred to as the
- "Throw" are added together to
- determine the score for the hand. Not
- being a Pinochle expert, I wish the
- method for computing the point value
- of the Throw would have been described
- in detail; however, the discussion of
- the method for computing the point
- value of the Meld is the best I have
- seen so far.
-
- Another factor of the program that
- I find somewhat annoying and possibly
- unfair to you, the human, is that when
- Knees Passes, you frequently are not
- given the oppor- tunity to Pass as
- well. I have had Hands that were
- simply awful and would have never
- chosen the minimum bid of 15! This is
- another modification that I plan to
- make in the future. But right now I
- can't wait to get back to another game
- of MODSTAR PINOCHLE!
